History and mission

This information and referral service is assured by the Information and Referral Centre of Greater Montréal with the financial support of the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec. The Information and Referral Centre of Greater Montréal is a non profit organization providing free information and referral services in Montréal since 1956.

The implementation and management of Drugs: help and referral was granted to the Information and Referral Centre following a recommendation to the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec by a working committee on drug abuse prevention, headed by Mr. Mario Bertrand, to the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec. This recommendation stated to : "set up a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, telephone information and help line on drug abuse for all the population of Québec".

The Information and Referral Centre of Greater Montréal's mission is Helping through Information. Drugs: help and referral's mission has been defined as follows: to provide help and referral services that are free, bilingual, confidential and anonymous, to people who have problems with drugs, to their relatives and peers, and also to community workers.

Prix d'excellence

The Prix d'excellence Ubald-Villeneuve has been awarded to the service Drugs: help and referral on the occasion of the XXVIIth congress of the Association des intervenants en toxicomanie du Québec on the 27th of October 1999. The price underlines the initiative of the Referral Centre, the innovative aspect of the telephone service, its involvement in the community and in the network of the drug addiction services. This prize underlines in a eloquent way the quality of work done by the counsellors and volunteers of the service.
