This year, the Drugs: Help and Referral team took 16,828 calls, an increase of 12% compared to last year. The increase was mainly noted in the areas of Montréal, Montérégie, Capitale- Nationale and Saguenay — Lac-Saint-Jean.
Source of requests
Parents of adolescents, young adults or grown adults with a problem constituted 12% of our callers, the loved ones of an addict 10% and partners of addicts 4%: therefore, more than one quarter of our callers were worried about the drug use or addiction of their loved one and were looking for ways to help them.
The vast majority of callers were the users themselves. Furthermore, 7% of calls were from the public and private sectors.
Type of needs
Callers of Drugs: Help and Referral presented different needs. Here are the most important by descending order: reliable information on substances, withdrawal, prevention, profile of an addict, addiction, as well as the concept of co- dependency.
These were followed by: support during a particularly difficult time, the need for inpatient or outpatient therapy, information on mental health, shelter, help for crisis situations, help for suicidal situations and anything regarding violence and violence at the hands of the addict. Finally, the need to join a support group, to go to medical detoxification or detoxification support, getting on a treatment drug for an opiate addiction and information on relapses
